Dedicated pages live for 650 companies w/ full 43-101 data on each property.

without comments

We’ve now loaded up several pages of data for each company, most importantly including a page showing full data on stage of development, percentage ownership, resource, production and cash costs for each property in a company’s portfolio. This data is extremely labor intensive to gather with completeness and accuracy, so these pages are a great addition to our site.

For example, here’s what we show for Goldcorp’s Pueblo Viejo property (we show everything they make public):

To see them, starting from the datagrid, click on any view other than List View (ie: Basic Data, Financial Data, Financial Strength, etc), then click on a company’s name to visit its dedicated pages.

They are still a bit incomplete and rough around the edges, but the property data pages are in good shape, and those alone HUGELY increase the data available on this site.

Check out Goldcorp’s properties page for an example. Follow the link below and then click on “Resource Data”.

http://miningalmanac.com/Goldcorp_Inc_G/ Full data on 20 properties! How about them apples?

Rare earth elements getting rarer

without comments

The Mad Hedge Funder reports via  Zerohedge on the tight supply/demand situation in rare earth elements (REE):

Interest in Rare Earths is starting to heat up in a dramatic fashion, and it something you should keep on your radar. So named because they were hard to get in the 18th and 19th century, these once obscure elements have suddenly become the focus of several converging trends in the global economy, as they are the key ingredient of magnets. There are 17 in all, divided into light (cerium, Ce, lanthanum, La, and neodymium, Nd) and heavy (dysprosium, Dy, terbium, Tb, and europium, Eu).

It turns out that you can’t build a hybrid or electric car, a wind turbine, thin film solar, LED’s, high performance batteries, or a cell phone without these elements. One Prius uses 25 kilograms of the stuff. You also can’t fight a modern war without rare earths, being essential for radar, missile guidance systems, navigation, and night vision goggles.

That’s where things get interesting. China now produces 97% of the world’s rare earth supplies, much of it coming from small mines operating by criminal gangs where it is safe to say, concerns about environmental considerations are nil. Last year China announced that it may start restricting rare earth exports, possibly banning several, it is thought, in order to force foreigners to buy more of their downstream electronic products. Such a ban could begin as early as 2012.

The world market for rare earths is tiny now, amounting to only $1.4 billion a year. But Toyota intends on doubling its production of  Prius’s from one million to 2 million units in the near future, while China and South Korea want to boost their combined electric and hybrid production by 1 million units by the end of next year. Demand for wind turbines is going off the charts, thanks to massive government subsidies in Europe and the US… (cont.)

Read the article in its entirety here, or try a search for companies with rare earth elements (select “REE”) or heavy minerals (select “heavy minerals”) using the Minerals filter.

A quick search of database shows 25 companies with REE or heavy minerals. They include, off the top of the list in alphabetical order:

We enjoyed seeing you at PDAC.

without comments

We are delighted with how well our trip to Toronto went. We met with people from dozens of companies in our database, as well as investment bankers and investor relations consultants, and got some great feedback on the market. We got the picture that people have been waiting for a website like the Mining Almanac, and that it will be a valued tool so long as we ensure the accuracy of our data and keep it up to date in a timely fashion.

Regarding accuracy, we informed companies that we will soon be contacting them to confirm their resource data. For now this is a manual process (companies in our database may just email us at info@miningalmanac.com to see and check the property data we have for them before we put it on the web), but we are building an automated system to allow approved company representatives to login and either confirm their data or inform us of errors. This will be rolled out in the coming weeks, and each company will be assigned login information. After a company has confirmed their data, either manually or through the secure web form, they will recieve a gold “check mark” next to their name in the datagrid.

As for keeping the info up to date, the financial data is automated and always fast. The resource data is kept current by continually monitoring press releases for updates, in addition to periodically checking websites and filings. If a company releases new resource data, they may wish to alert us so that we get it up right away.

As you can tell, the key to timely and reliable data is going to be communication with the companies in our database. We have known this from the planning stages, so we were very encouraged to meet so many respresentatives in person and to see how open they were to working with us to make this the top database website in the industry.
